What is Tata Motors?

Tata Motors is an Indian automotive manufacturer headquartered in Mumbai. It is owned by the conglomerate Tata Group which is involved in industries as diverse as hospitality, steel, and telecommunications. How did Tata Motors come to own the Jaguar brand? Here is a quick rundown of its history:

  1. In 2008, Tata Motors purchased Jaguar and Land Rover. A few years later, in 2013, Jaguar Land Rover Limited was formed.
  2. Tata Motors owns several other automotive operations worldwide in the commercial vehicle segment and the passenger vehicle segment.
  3. Tata Motors is part of the Tata Group, which dates back to 1868. Tata Group had its beginnings as a trading company. It is also known for several major achievements, such as building the first hotel in India that had electricity back in 1907. The Tata Group is also responsible for Western India’s first hydro powerplant as well as the Indian Institute of Science in 1911.

Who Owned Jaguar?

The Jaguar brand had its start in 1922. William Lyons and William Walmsley started the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool, England. Not long after, the company was rebranded as S.S. Cars Limited. In 1935, the company released both the SS Jaguar and SS Jaguar 100. Before long, these Jaguar models became the luxury car company we know today.

  1. S.S. Cars became Jaguar Cars Limited in 1945.
  2. Jaguar made a name for itself in the sports car segment thanks to models such as the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE. The brand also made a splash in international motorsports, winning the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
  3. Jaguar Cars joined British Motor Holdings Limited in 1965. The company later joined forces with Rover manufacturer Leyland Motor Corporation Limited. When this happened, the British Leyland Motor Corporation was formed.
  4. The British Leyland Motor Corporation became nationalized in 1975 due to financial difficulties. However, the Jaguar brand once again made an appearance in 1984.
  5. Jaguar was purchased in 1999 by Ford Motors. Land Rover was purchased the next year. Ford Motors sold both brands to Tata Motors in 2008.

Who Makes Jaguar / Where is the Jaguar Factory?

Although Tata Motors is headquartered in India, you will find the Jaguar Land Rover headquarters in Coventry. Coventry is approximately two hours north of London. If you are interested in seeing how Jaguar vehicles are produced, you have the opportunity to tour the factory. You will find Jaguar assembly plants around the world, however, if your vehicle is purchased in America, it is highly likely that it came from the facility in Birmingham, England. Below, you can see where some of your favorite Jaguar models are produced globally:

  • Birmingham, England — Jaguar XE, XF, XJ, and F-TYPE
  • Solihull, England — Jaguar F-PACE
  • Wolverhampton, England — Engine assembly plant
  • Graz, Austria — This facility is co-operated by Magna Steyr, and it manufactures the Jaguar E-PACE and I-PACE
  • Changshu, China — Jaguar XE and XF, and engine assembly
  • Pune, India — Assembly of complete knock-down kits* for the Jaguar XF and XJ

*A complete knock-down kit is a kit of parts that have been manufactured in one country (England for example). The kit is then sent to another country (India in this case) for the final assembly.
