What is Antifreeze and What is it Used For?

Man Filling Antifreeze Fluid in His Car

Drivers of Dallas know that regular vehicle maintenance is important to keep their vehicles running smoothly. They know antifreeze is an important part of their vehicle, but not everyone may know what it is used for. The service experts at Bob Moore Auto Group are here for any questions you may have including what is antifreeze, what is it used for, and why is it so important?

What is Antifreeze?

Our service department often sees drivers wondering whether antifreeze is a coolant. While antifreeze and coolant are often referenced interchangeably, coolant is actually a mixture of antifreeze and water. In most cases, coolant is a straight 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water, however, mixtures of 70% antifreeze and 30% water are used to increase potency. While antifreeze and coolant sound like they work against each other, they both play an important role in keeping your engine’s temperature regulated while you drive.

Antifreeze is generally made of either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol and can have a green, pink, or orange color depending on its composition. Most vehicles will use green antifreeze, but that should be verified from the vehicles owner’s manual. The expert technicians at our service center near Edmond can help with finding the right antifreeze for your make and model.

What is the Purpose of Antifreeze?

Antifreeze is used to regulate the temperature of the engine and prevent the engine from being affected by extreme temperatures. The antifreeze is stored in the vehicle’s radiator and connected to a reservoir in the engine bay where it gets circulated through the engine with a water pump. This cycle allows the combustion-generated heat to move away from the engine as the hot coolant is circulated back to the radiator to be cooled by air. The cycle continues while the vehicle is running to keep the engine at the right temperature.

Importance of Antifreeze

When it gets cold on the streets of Tulsa, antifreeze plays an important role in keeping a vehicle running safely and smoothly. If an engine runs without the proper coolant, major damage can be seen in key components such as the water pump, engine cylinders, connector rods, or head gasket. If the hood of the vehicle is too hot or smoke can be seen coming from under it, schedule an appointment at the service center where genuine OEM parts are used for repair.
