The History of Buick GMC
Buick incorporated in 1903 and moved to Flint, Michigan. A year later, the company began producing Model B touring cars. In just five years, Buick overtook Ford and Cadillac as the top producer of vehicles. In 1908, the company made almost 9000 models.
During the same time, GMC was founded in 1902 as Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. In two years, the company would make 75 trucks in Pontiac, Michigan. It was in 1909 when GM brought GMC in as part of the company. GMC would continue to focus on trucks with the move from ½-ton trucks to 10-ton models in the 1930s.
By the 1990s, GMC refined its truck line with high-performance models and more amenities. The Classic Sierra and Suburban became two of the most popular models.
Buick continued to grow during the 20th century, reaching the one-million point by the time the company was 20 years old. By the 1960s, Buick had introduced the Electra 225 and the Riviera. During the 1970s, Buick focused on performance cars, including a turbo model. The 90s saw a move towards more luxury models, such as the Park Avenue. During the 2000s, Buick added SUVs to its lineup with the Buick Enclave becoming a luxury crossover that offered features not seen in the segment.
