The History of Chrysler
Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in 1925 and quickly began diversifying like he had seen with other successful automotive companies. Chrysler purchased Dodge Brothers and Fargo Trucks, creating brands from those companies in 1928. In 1987, American Motors Corporation was acquired by Chrysler, which brought Jeep into the company.
Chrysler’s first automobile was developed in 1924 and contained many features not seen in vehicles at that time, such as a carburetor air filter and an oil filter. By 1936, Chrysler was second in sales in the US. Plymouth was introduced in the late 1920s for the low-end of the market. DeSoto was also introduced to fill the mid-price line. To compete with Cadillac and Lincoln, Chrysler developed the Imperial.
In 1998, Chrysler partnered with Daimler-Benz AG, a German auto manufacturer. As Daimler Chrysler, the Eagle and Plymouth brands were dropped with a stronger focus placed on Jeep and the new Grand Cherokee. In 2014, Chrysler and Fiat joined forced under the name Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Today, the company is made up of four lines: Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM, as well as Mopar replacement parts for all Chrysler vehicles.
