Types of EVs
Electric vehicles come in many shapes and sizes, from compact sedans to SUVs and pickup trucks. Across these styles, different types of motors, engines, and powertrains are offered. Most folks are familiar with a full-on EV. This type of vehicle is powered by an electric plug at home or charging stations across the country, and it is entirely reliant on that electric charge without consuming gas. While regular gas vehicles sit on the other end of the spectrum, you have two options: all-electric or gas which offers you the best of both worlds.Â
The first is a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV). A PHEV has an electric motor and a gas engine. Like the full EV, the electric motor is powered by a wall plug-in or charging station but offers a smaller battery pack. PHEVs have a limited number of electric miles before switching to gas. Most PHEVs on the market offer around 30 miles of electric range before sipping on gas. Consumers love PHEVs for their ability to drive around town without using gas but also for the flexibility to take road trips using that gas engine.Â
The other option is the straight Hybrid (HEV). Hybrids don’t plug into a charging station but still have an engine and electric motor. The electric motor is fueled by a battery pack charged by your brakes and the engine itself! Both Hybrid options consume less gas, allowing you to drive further on a single gas tank. Electric Range & Charging
The range on your EV will vary, with most ranges around 250-300 miles. As mentioned, PHEVs typically get about a tenth of that range before switching to gas, and the Hybrids use the electric motor to extend the MPG you get without needing to be charged. Your EV will come with an at-home charging station, which, depending on your model, can be installed by you or a member of our team! You’ll switch from a gas bill to an electric bill from your transit, saving you thousands of dollars in fuel throughout your EV’s life. If you need a charge on the road, there are thousands of locations to choose from, with more going up daily. Contact Bob Moore Auto Group for any questions about charging and range!

In addition to the obvious savings on fuel, EVs also tend to require fewer components and have less failure points than a gas car, meaning you’ll save on oil changes and routine maintenance! Many EVs and hybrids are also eligible for state and federal tax credits that will significantly lower the sticker price of most EVs.
