The History of Ford

As one of the original Detroit automakers, Ford is well-known for its history of innovation and dedication to quality. Incorporated in 1903 and founded by Henry Ford, this company has had a long and illustrious history in the automotive industry. Ford began an innovative way of building cars on a large scale through the use of assembly lines. The first Ford models were labeled by letters of the alphabet with the Model T being the first to sell millions during its almost 20 years. It was later replaced with the Model A, which was unique in the fact that it was the first to have safety glass for the windshield.

Ford developed the Mercury as a higher-end companion for the Ford models, beginning in 1939. The company also purchased Lincoln Motor Company to enter the luxury car segment of the market in 1922. The Mustang, Ford’s most popular car, was first introduced in 1964. In the early 2000s, Ford took advantage of the crossover market to build SUVs like the Escape.

The Ford truck has been around since 1908 with the first model, Ford Model TT. Trucks have been one of the staples of the company ever since with the F-Series in production today. Part of this lineup today includes the Ford F-150 and Ford Ranger.

Ford has also been one of the premier manufacturers on the racing circuit with the Mustang GT representing in the Cup Series and the F-150 in the Truck Series. Models that have done well in stock car racing include the Ford Torino and Ford Thunderbird.
