2. Start by finding the dipstick. On FWD cars, the dipstick is typically found to the right of the oil dipstick. Refer to your owner’s manual for guidance if necessary. 
3. Take out the dipstick. Touch the fluid and examine it closely. It should have a slightly pink hue. Schedule service immediately if you notice that the fluid has a burnt smell or is discolored. 
4. Wipe the dipstick off with a rag. Then, reinsert the dipstick. Remove it once again and check the level. You’ll want to add more fluid if the level is under the “Full” marking. 
5. Add more fluid using a funnel until it reaches the “Full” marking. It’s important that you do not overfill your vehicle!

When it comes to replacing (AKA “flushing”) transmission fluid, you’ll want to stick to your vehicle’s recommended maintenance intervals which can be found in your manual. For a manual transmission, most manufacturers generally recommend that you change the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you have an automatic, you’ll want to schedule a transmission flush anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 miles.
