Bob Moore How Many Miles Do Tires Last?

Close up of tire tread
As a general rule, the original tires on a new vehicle or quality replacement tires should last up to 50,000 miles. However, many factors will have a significant impact on any tire’s life and may substantially shorten its life expectancy. If you have any concerns about your tires’ functionality and safety, stop into any of the Bob Moore Auto Group service centers to have them inspected by a factory trained specialist.

What Factors Affect Tire Lifespan

When a customer asks “how many miles will these tires last” or “how long should my tires last,” they expect a concrete answer. And while the tire manufacturer might label the tire with a 50,000-mile life, that is only an estimate. Many variables come into play when determining how long a set of tires will last on your vehicle and under your driving conditions. Some of the more critical items to consider when evaluating tire life expectancy include:

  • TIRE TYPE- The softer the tire, the more grip it provides on the pavement. But the downside is that these softer tires wear more quickly because of the added friction on the road surface. So high-performance tires will wear out much sooner than a standard all-season model.
  • TREADWEAR RATING- Different tires have different treadwear ratings. The higher the rating, the longer the tire will last.
  • DRIVETRAIN- The drivetrain on your vehicle determines where the power from the motor is distributed. So, if the power is going to only a single wheel, or tire, that tire will experience more wear than the three non-drive tires.
  • ROAD CONDITIONS- Gravel and dirt roads tend to cause more wear on tires than a smoothly paved driving surface. Also, if you are more adventurous and take your vehicle off-road, you can expect your tires to wear out sooner than the average mileage life expectancy might indicate.
  • TERRAIN- Driving on hills or mountains will cause more wear to your tires as they are working to pull your vehicle up hills and slow it when going down hills.
  • DRIVING HABITS- Slow, smooth pressure on both the accelerator and brake pedals will help increase your tires’ life. Fast starts and stops cause much faster wear to the surface of your tires. And when you burn out from a stop, you remove a significant amount of life from your tires.

How To Extend Tire Life

  • Keep tires properly inflated. Check the air pressure regularly and inflate them as needed.
  • Have your tires rotated regularly to avoid excessive wear on the drivetrain tire or tires and front tires. Learn how to perform at home tire rotations today!
  • Have your tires balanced when you notice an odd shake or bounce when driving. Keeping your tires balanced will eliminate abnormal wear patterns.
  • Build good driving habits. Start and stop gradually to avoid excessive tire wear. Avoid turning the steering wheel when the vehicle is not in motion. That tends to grind down the tire surface prematurely.
  • Schedule regular tire inspections and maintenance at your nearest Bob Moore Service Center
