Electrify America charging station in Oklahoma

Oklahoma continued to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure in April, awarding three bids to companies to build EV charging stations along Oklahoma’s interstates. The funds will be used to construct 13 charging stations across Interstate 35, Interstate 40, and Interstate 44. In an effort to combat range anxiety, Oklahoma is building out charging stations across the state, starting with interstate alternative fuel corridors and then branching out to other communities around the state. The intial $8.7 million dollar investment represents the first of three stages to meet growing charging demand. After phase one builds out Oklahoma’s main corridors, phase two will look to add charging at alternative corridors, while phase three will look for communities and other corridors not recognized as fuel corridors. Love’s, Francis Energy, and Tesla Inc will construct the charging stations in this funding phase. The companies must build four 150-kilowatt chargers within a mile of the exit, within 50 miles of each other.

The state was allotted $66 million from the $5 billion dollar federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The state is using $8.7 million dollars of that allotment in phase one. To be eligible for funds, the three companies building the charging station must also put their own money into the project, so the total initial investment will be $16.1 million dollars. The federal program aims to build a network of 500,000 EV charges by 2030 along designated alternative fuel corridors. Once constructed, the charging stations will charge your vehicle up to 80% within 15 to 45 minutes. The cost should range between 35-75 cents, depending on the location and time. State officials hope to see the charging stations up and running within the next 12 to 18 months. As the number of charging stations increases over the next several months and years, owning an EV as your everyday vehicle becomes more accessible than ever.
