How to Change a Brake Light

Car brake lights

Your brake light is a crucial part of your vehicle’s safety components. Plus, it’s illegal to drive around Dallas with a broken taillight. Eventually, you’ll need to know how to replace a brake light, and that is why our service team has made it easy for you to learn. Fortunately, the process is pretty simple. Learn how to change a brake light here in this step-by-step guide with the service center team at Bob Moore Auto Group.

How to Change a Brake Light Step-by-Step

If you’re not afraid of a little DIY task, you can change a brake light yourself pretty quickly and get back on Edmond roads safely. Just follow these steps:

  1. Find the Correct Bulbs: First, check your owner’s manual to determine the correct bulb and voltage amount for your vehicle. Then, order the replacement bulb from the parts center at Bob Moore Auto Group.
  2. Remove the Light Cover: Now that you have the correct bulb for your vehicle, remove the cover of the brake light bulbs. Typically, you just need a Phillips-head screwdriver, but contact our service team if you run into any trouble.
  3. Remove the Old Bulb: Once you’ve removed your brake light cover, remove the old bulb. Usually, you can twist it out by hand.
  4. Apply Dielectric Grease: Apply a bit of dielectric grease to the end of the new bulb to prevent it from corrosion and rust. The grease will also allow you to change the bulb more quickly the next time you replace it.
  5. Install the New Brake Bulb: Screw in the new light bulb, then reattach your taillight cover. Now, your brake light should be ready for Dallas streets.

Regularly Check Your Brake Lights

Your brake lights are a crucial signal to other Tulsa drivers that you are stopping or slowing. That’s why you should regularly check your brake light and headlamps to make sure they’re working correctly and aren’t too dim or burnt out. It’s not only dangerous to have a broken brake light, but you can also get pulled over and fined by the police or State Patrol. And a few dollars spent now is a lot better than a several hundred dollar ticket later!
